Yvan Duque, an illustrator with extensive experience in the field of gouache technique and extensive experience in the field of children’s literature and illustrated albums, will teach you how to make a character from start to finish.

Brightness, texture, volumes, scene and soil; or the balanced combination of tones and values of our color palette, passing through the humidity and density suitable for gouache to the correct size of brushes, are some of the key elements to develop and objectives to learn in this course.

What does this course include?

You are going to learn how to use the sponge resource in a delicate and subtle way to obtain textures.

You are going to appreciate how we must correctly choose the colors that we are going to use and what is consequently the most appropriate values of our palette for the painting that we are going to make.

In this course, we will paid special attention to how to care for contour lines. Its cleaning is essential. We will spend time observing the drying point of our gouache and its ideal humidity in each phase.

You are going to learn how to create volume in our character’s face, and how to play with the green and blue values to combine them throughout our illustration, adding complementary colors from time to time to give contrast to the composition.

Yvan will show us how to add background color, so that we can define the silhouette of our character, illuminate the scene and contrast our “little tree” on stage. For this, we will learn what the proper density of gouache should be, in harmony with the amount of water we must use to achieve our goals.

Purpose of the courses

During this course, you will learn how to create textures and volumes by applying color to an illustration, using traditional paper gouache techniques. This process will take place from start to finish. For almost two hours of the course, you will be able to contemplate a continuous demonstration of Yvan Duque, as well as an explanation and breakdown of his entire process in simple steps that will allow you to apply these ideas after your own work.

Once the process is complete, you will be able to better understand your personal creative process.
